Maunsell White papers, 1852-1898.

Letters and documents establishing the title of Ashley Plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish, La., for the sale of the plantation by John Julian Pringle to Albert A. Batchelor in 1898. Ashley Plantation was formerly owned by Maunsel White, who sold the plantation to Pringle in 1852. The papers comprise the bill of sale transferring the title of the plantation and the ownership of 52 slaves from White to Pringle; a letter from White to Pringle enumerating the amount of land, slaves, livestock, and other goods included in the sale; an 1897 letter from a Pointe Coupee notary public to Batchelor stating what documents are required to establish the title of the plantation; and a letter from Batchelor to the notary concerning the documents.

Maunsel White was a New Orleans commission merchant and Plaquemines Parish, La., planter. His son, Maunsell White, Jr. (fl. 1835-1883), was also a merchant and planter.
